About Georgia

Georgia Laurie is a contemporary artist based in Melbourne, Australia, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from RMIT University. Known for her dynamic and immersive works, Georgia’s practice spans both mural painting and studio art. She has been recognised for her academic excellence, receiving the History Art Award at RMIT, and won the prestigious Tolarno Art Prize in 2020. Additionally, she has been a finalist in a variety of art prizes, exhibitions, and shows.

Georgia’s artistic journey often takes her beyond the studio, with recent international mural projects in cities such as Helsinki, Bristol, Lisbon and Mexico. Her work, which blends bold design and intricate detail, is a testament to her adaptability and global reach in the mural painting scene.

In addition to her mural practice, Georgia works as a scenic artist in the film and TV industry, contributing to set design and construction for a range of film and entertainment projects. This dual involvement in both public art and film further enriches her understanding of space, scale, and visual storytelling.

Whether in a gallery, on a mural, or in a studio, Georgia’s work invites viewers to engage with her unique artistic vision, which is rooted in both academic rigor and creative exploration.

Artist Statement

Throughout history humans have had a spatial and spiritual relationship to the natural world, due to modern times this relationship has gone through a disconnect. The structures we build reveal a great deal about our natural environment as well as expressing the artistic sensibility of a place, it’s history and meaning. The spaces we occupy can either foster connection and harmony or reinforce separation.

My compositions are rooted in dystopian surrealism, reflecting the fragmented and often conflicting perspectives that shape today’s society. I aim to explore how we navigate the complexities around sustainability, architecture, and the natural environment.

Through collage and oil painting techniques, I create visual compositions that strike balance within chaos. Assembling disparate parts into a cohesive image invites a reconsideration of how we understand and make sense of the world. I invite audiences to engage in a dialogue on the way modern society impacts our irreplaceable ecosystem.
